Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs opened up the defense of their championship with a loss at home to the Lions Thursday night, and Mahomes couldn’t feel good about it after that.
“It’s embarrassing for me to lose any time,” Mahomes said. “Like I said after the ring ceremony, I’ve moved on to next season. Obviously, it’s great that the fans can see the banner and go to Arrowhead Stadium. But this is a brand new year, and I think I know that and we’re trying to win another Super Bowl and obviously this isn’t The way we wanted to start. So any time I lose I feel embarrassed. So I will try to improve so as not to lose more as the season goes on.
Mahomes said he didn’t watch the Chiefs’ pre-game Super Bowl party or look at the championship banner the Chiefs unfurled at Arrowhead Stadium because he’s so focused on this year.
“I haven’t seen it,” Mahomes said. “I don’t know if you look at the banner. Like I said, I’ve moved on. It’s a new season. My goal wasn’t just to win and finish the Super Bowl, I try to keep doing it every year. We have a team, but obviously we have to get better.”
When asked about his message to the dressing room after the match, Mahomes said: “I have to be better.”
