Thursday, Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes scored his second straight touchdown full Practice before Sunday Asian Championship match vs Cincinnati Bengals. It’s a very good sign for Mahomes, who suffered a high ankle sprain in his right leg during the Chiefs’ divisional round win over Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday.
Speaking to the media prior to Thursday’s practice, head coach Andy Reid revealed that pulling Mahomes on Wednesday proved unnecessary. On Thursday, he made it clear that he feels comfortable with how Mahomes has moved around the enclave.
“His foot is in good shape now, so he can still move around then,” said Reed. “So he’s not just throwing with his full arm. But he’s got a good enough arm. I’ve seen him do it even when there’s no problem with the ankle, so he’ll throw some balls where he’s flat-footed.”
Reed added that now that the Chiefs consider him okay, the challenge for the quarterback is to work within the game plan that was designed to beat Cincinnati. On Wednesday, wide receiver Joe Jo Smith-Schuster He described that game plan as “fire.”
Unsurprisingly, Mahomes’ week of prep for the game was a little different than usual. The quarterback explained that because of his injury, he arrived a little earlier for treatment before meetings, media commitments and practice – and then there’s a bit more rehab before watching a movie and going home to sleep.
Once home, Mahomes described using “one of 8,000 different devices” to help speed up the healing process for his ankle.
“Throughout the day, you have highs and lows,” Mahomes said before Thursday’s practice. “You prepare yourself to get ready to train, you train as hard as you can—and then, obviously, you’re a little sadder than you used to be. You work on it and do your therapy and stuff afterward to get in better shape anytime you go to sleep—and you get up and do it from new.
“I think I’ve gradually improved over the course of the week, and I’m just going to try to keep doing that: keep the same mentality and push it – but at the same time, be ready to go whenever the game starts.”
An essential part of the week was testing what he could do.
Mahomes and the Chiefs’ athletic coaching staff seem to be putting him in a place where he feels comfortable working out of pocket. Those off-hull, run-on-the-spot plays have become famous may be Stay tuned against Cincinnati.
“I still feel like I can do a lot of things,” Mahomes said. “We’ll see the closer we get – and we’ll see during the game. You can’t do exactly what you’re going to do in those moments in the game, but all I can do is prepare myself the best way I can – and then, as we get into the game, you hope the adrenaline kind of takes over and you can do These throws when you need to.”
As expected, Reed checks in with Mahomes to get his status measured several times a day.
“I see Patrick a lot during the day,” Reed explained. I talk to him – and I have regular meetings with (Head Athletic Trainer and Vice President) Rick [Burkholder] And tell me. The best I can get is either from Pat – or most of all, what he does [while] play.
It’s been going well, according to the chiefs — though It didn’t stop fans enjoying the game of American football from wondering playfully.
“Nobody knows unless they actually get their hands on it and see it — but all I can do is prepare my body in the best way possible,” Mahomes said with a laugh. “I’ve seen the videos and everything is like what I’m walking about. I don’t know what you can really get out of walking. But I think on Sunday people will see where I am. Patient See on Sunday where I’m at.
