Many Procreate users can breathe a sigh of relief now that the popular iPad illustration app has taken a firm stand against generative AI. “We will not be introducing any generative AI into our products,” Procreate’s CEO said. James Koda said in a video posted on X website:“I don’t like what’s happening to the industry, and I don’t like what it’s doing to artists.”
“Generative AI dehumanizes things,” Procreate said in a blog post. “This technology, built on theft, is leading us toward a barren future.” New AI section on its website“We believe that machine learning is a compelling technology with great value, but the path that generative AI is taking is wrong for us.”
Procreate is very well received by comparison. The company has stuck to a one-time purchase model of $12.99 rather than moving to an ongoing subscription like Adobe and Clip Studio Paint have done, and has expanded to offer products for animation and (eventually) desktop users. This firm pledge not to offer generative AI is likely to be just the icing on the cake for creatives who feel like alternative options are dwindling.
“We don’t know exactly where this story will go, or how it will end, but we believe we are on the right path to supporting human creativity,” Koda said.
