Russia said on Sunday it was deeply concerned about Iranian strikes on Israel and called on all parties to exercise restraint but said tensions would remain high until the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is resolved.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement regarding the Iranian attacks: “We express our deep concern about another dangerous escalation in the region.” He added: “We call on all parties concerned to exercise restraint.”
Russia indicated that Tehran said that the attack was carried out within the framework of the right of self-defense after the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, which Moscow condemned.
Russia, which has close ties to Iran, said the West blocked attempts in the UN Security Council to respond to the Israeli raid on the consulate.
The ministry said: “We have repeatedly warned that the numerous unresolved crises in the Middle East, especially in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone, which are often fueled by irresponsible provocative actions, will lead to increased tension.”
The Kremlin has not yet commented publicly.
