Following backlash from its community, Sony has canceled plans to enforce mandatory PSN tethering for Helldivers 2 players on Steam.
Helldivers 2 players on Steam will soon be required to link to a PSN account for safety and security, the publisher announced on Friday. She said this would always be a requirement for PC players, but due to issues at launch, the link was made optional for a while.
The news was immediately met with intense backlash, leading to an outpouring of negative comments from Helldivers 2 players on Steam. Many have requested a refund as Helldivers 2 has been pulled from sale in 177 countries where PSN is not available.

“Helldivers fans – we’ve heard your feedback about the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and existing players starting on May 30, will not go forward.”
Sony said it was “still learning what works best for PC players,” and called the recent wave of feedback “invaluable.” He then thanked everyone for their “continued support for Helldivers 2,” before promising to keep us updated on future plans.
Re-sharing Sony’s post, Arrowhead CEO and Helldivers 2 creative director Johan Pilestedt said he was impressed by players’ “willpower… and their ability to collaborate” over the past few days. He then went on to thank Sony for their decision to make PSN tethering optional again.
“Together we want to set a new standard for what a live game is, and how developers and the community can support each other to create the best gaming experiences,” Bilstedt concluded.
