The Swedish Presidency of the European Union is pushing for the adoption in Brussels of the EC proposal on the reform of the migration and asylum system. However, according to unofficial information from the PAP, doubts about the plan are growing in EU countries. Countries in Central and Eastern Europe, including Poland, are among those opposed to the EC proposal.
According to PAP information, a diplomatic debate was held in Brussels on Monday, during which the countries of Central and Eastern Europe opposed the EC’s proposal of EUR 22,000 per migrant in case of refusal to relocate.
Opposition, Polish among others
The proposal was directly supported by Greece and Luxembourg. She was opposed by Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Croatia, Romania and Slovakia. Germany has doubts.
As the debate progresses, differences of opinion multiply. There are many voices that the program should go to expert level
one of the EU diplomats told PAP.
Andrzej Sadoś, Poland’s permanent representative to the EU, reiterated at the meeting that Poland does not agree to a choice between extradition and procedural punishment, according to PAP.
Poland believes a proposal to reform the EU asylum and migration system still needs a lot of work in Brussels.
Sadhos points out, among other things, the differences in GDP per capita and wage levels between Western and Central-Eastern European countries and, in this regard, stress that EUR 22,000 per migrant for all EU countries is unfair.
According to unofficial information from the PAP, according to the Polish Embassy, Poland said that it does not agree to the mandatory elements of the plan, because, among other things, it believes that no one should force migrants to change their residence within the EU against their will. .
The Swedes, who hold the EU presidency, want to reach a compromise between EU countries on the matter by the end of June, but according to PAP sources, divisions between member states are too big to do so.
There is no shortage of voices in Brussels that Russia could exploit disputes between member states over migration.
Sweden is opening a Pandora’s box, a situation that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Aliaksandr Lukashenko are monitoring. Their goal is to destabilize Europe. In this form the Commission’s proposal provides incentives for migrant smugglers. It actually puts the mistakes made by Western European countries in migration policy onto the backs of Eastern European taxpayers.
one of the EU diplomats told PAP
A meeting of ambassadors of member states to the European Union will be held on Wednesday and a meeting of interior ministers in Luxembourg on Thursday. EC proposal where both topics exist.
Back to the discussion from 2015
In May, EU Interior Commissioner Jylva Johansson presented a proposal to member states’ ambassadors to reform the asylum and migration system. It is a resumption of the debate that began in 2015 with the migration crisis in the EU. At the time, some countries were unwilling to accept migrants for forced relocation. As a result, the EC initiated procedures for infringement of EU law against these countries and Poland.
Polish diplomatic sources said at the time that Commissioner Johansson proposed in practice to introduce a mandatory relocation mechanism for irregular migrants.
The EC said it had proposed a “compulsory unanimity system” and member states could “decide on unanimity measures”.
These include relocation, financial and operational support. It is important that Member States that need support receive it
