The incident took place at approximately 9:45pm on Saturday, in the Seine Valley next to the Eiffel Tower. The assailant attacked the two with a knife and a hammer. The victim died and the injured woman was taken to hospital.
French television BFMTV reported that two more people were attacked with a knife near the scene of the first incident.
Several dozen minutes later, French Interior Minister Gérald Dormanin announced that police had captured the attacker.
According to BFMTV, French President Emmanuel Macron spoke to Tarmanin on the phone about the situation from a flight back from Doha, Qatar.
According to AFP, citing a police source, the assailant shouted “Allah Akbar” during the attack. The man must have French citizenship and be born in France.
