Reactions to Rockstar’s recently announced PS4 and Switch port of open-world cowboy Red Dead Redemption have been mixed to say the least, with the £40 / $50 price point being particularly criticized. However, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two, insisted that the pricing was “commercially accurate”.
Those unhappy with the price of the Red Dead Redemption port will note that this re-release is missing the multiplayer mode included with the now 13-year-old original game, and fails to take advantage of the modern technology that powers it. The Xbox 360 version, which is playable on Xbox One and Series X/S via backwards compatibility, doesn’t help either. Currently being purchased digitally for £30.
to talk to IGNHowever, Take-Two CEO Zelnick has brushed off the complaints, insisting, “This is what we believe is the commercially accurate price for it.” He also noted the inclusion of Undead Nightmare in the Switch and PS4 port, calling the zombie-themed DLC “a great standalone game in its own right when it was originally released, so we feel it’s a great first-time package, and definitely a great value for consumers.”
As for the decision to abandon the PC version of its Red Dead Redemption port — another controversial move, given the game’s continued absence on the platform — Zelnick wouldn’t pull when asked if there was a chance it might arrive in the future, just saying the announcements were left to their teams.
Red Dead Redemption launches for Switch and PlayStation 4 (with PlayStation 5 support via backwards compatibility) on August 17th.
