Tesla (TSLA) announces just over 250,000 deliveries – the first quarter that’s been down for a long time

Tesla announced production and delivery results for its second quarter (Q2) 2022 today and confirmed just over 250,000 deliveries – the first quarter of a long-running decline.

While most of the auto industry has seen a significant drop in deliveries in 2020 due to the pandemic and subsequent chip shortages, Tesla has been able to grow at an impressive rate.

In fact, Tesla has grown by 9 consecutive quarters since 2020. This makes the company quite unique in the auto industry for volume producers.

The automaker has managed to overcome both restrictions and limitations due to the pandemic and pivot to alternatives to avoid the bulk of the chip shortage.

It’s not like Tesla was completely unaffected, it was a tough time, but a quarter of them didn’t show it.

In the second quarter of 2022, it finally caught up with the automaker as COVID-19 restrictions in Shanghai forced the automaker to close its plant for much of the quarter.

Most industry analysts put Tesla’s second-quarter delivery estimates between 250,000 and 270,000 units — or about 50,000 units less than the previous quarter, which was an all-time high.

Production and Delivery Results in Tesla Q2 2022

Tesla today released its production and delivery results for the second quarter of 2022 and confirmed that the estimates were mostly correct.

The automaker confirmed 254,695 deliveries during the quarter and production of 258,580 vehicles:

Produce Delivery Subject to operating lease accounting
Model S / X 16,411 16,162 12%
Model 3 / p 242,169 238.533 3%
the total 258.580 254695 4%

In a press release summarizing the results, Tesla emphasized that “supply chain challenges and factory closures” resulted in a quarter of its first downturn in two years.

Interestingly, Tesla also stated that June 2022 was the company’s best month ever to produce cars:

“In the second quarter, we produced more than 258,000 vehicles and delivered more than 254,000 vehicles, despite ongoing supply chain challenges and plant closures outside of our control. June 2022 was the highest month for automobile production in Tesla’s history.”

We reported that Tesla recently managed this. Impressively increased production at Gigafactory Texas. The automaker is also increasing production capacity at each of its production facilities.

Tesla aims to have 4 factories, each with a production capacity of more than half a million cars per year, over the next 12 months. That’s more electric cars than any other automaker can produce.
