On Sunday, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said that despite the evidence, Russia Preparing to strike UkraineThe United States remains committed to seeking a diplomatic solution, and Kirby has made clear what negotiations with the Kremlin could look like.
In an appearance on “Fox News Sunday”, Kirby said the Biden administration “has made serious proposals about ways we can change the things we do in Europe” in order to address the concerns of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“We’ve made serious suggestions about ways we can change the things that we’re doing in Europe to try to tackle the situation,” Kirby said, adding that “some things are clearly not on the table.”
When asked by host Bill Hammer what was off the table, Kirby specifically mentioned the question of Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
“This is an issue for Ukraine and NATO,” Kirby said. “This is not something Mr. Putin can simply veto or decide for himself. This is the kind of thing, again, between the coalition and Ukraine.”
Kirby then detailed some of the issues for negotiation.
“We have made serious proposals about changing, for example, the scope and scale of some of our exercises in Europe, and a willingness to talk about offensive missile capabilities in Europe,” Kirby said, adding that the United States had “made other proposals to try to convince Mr. Putin that we are serious.” .
Hummer then asked if there were any lessons the administration had learned from the military withdrawal from Afghanistan. Kirby said the United States was “still trying to make sense of” everything that happened, but made clear that the situation in Afghanistan should not be compared to Russia and Ukraine.
“They are two very different cases,” Kirby said. “This is actually an attempt to prevent the war from happening.”
