According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), a recall of approximately 653,000 Trader Joe’s Mango and Tangerine-scented candles is underway.
The recall, announced Thursday in a CSPC alert, is due to a “fire hazard” that the limited-time, 5.7-ounce seasonal candles may pose to Trader Joe’s customers.
When lit, “candle flame can spread from the wick to the wax, causing a larger-than-expected flame, posing a fire hazard,” the grocery store chain said.

The recalled candles, all of which bear SKU number 56879 on their base, were sold at Trader Joe’s locations nationwide in June.

Trader Joe’s describes its Mango and Tangerine scented candles as having a “tropical treat” scent that will make people feel like they’re “relaxing in paradise and enjoying the citrusy summer breeze.”

“If you have purchased a Mango & Tangerine scented candle, please do not use it,” Trader Joe’s said in its announcement of the recall. “We urge you to dispose of the product or return it to any Trader Joe’s location for a full refund.”

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Trader Joe’s will offer customers who return the recalled $4 candles to the store a full refund. Alternatively, there is an option to receive a $4 gift card by submitting a form on the company’s website.

There were 14 reported candle ignitions. Of those, three caused “minor” property damage, while two resulted in minor burns, according to Environment Canada.
Trader Joe’s said on its website that it is communicating about the recall through in-store signs as well as its website and emails.
