As I mentioned Mach-E Forum.comFord has realized there is a problem with the Mustang Mach-E that warrants a safety recall. However, there is reportedly no current fix available. The forum notes a lack of repair parts, although Ford also mentions upcoming software and paid instructions. Meanwhile, Ford issued a moratorium on the sale of related vehicles.
Editor’s note: Ford provided the following details for clarification.
“Here are the key details in the recall notice we provided to NHTSA, which should be on their website. Please note that it’s not a sale stop. The dealer can still sell. They can’t deliver the vehicle. It’s no different than any other safety recall notice.” .It is a suspension of delivery.
In affected vehicles, rapid direct current (“DC”) charging and frequent wide-open pedal events can cause the main conductors of the high-voltage battery to overheat. Overheating may cause the electrical contact surfaces to bend and deform, which may cause an open conductor or a welded conductor to remain closed. An overheated connector that loosens while driving can result in a loss of motive power, which can increase the risk of an accident.
The remedy for this software is the On-Board Diagnostic Secondary Control Module (SOBDMC) and the Battery Power Control Module (BECM) software update. Ford is expected to begin deploying an Over-The-Air (OTA) update to its SOBDMC, BECM program for affected vehicles next month. Instead, owners will have the option to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealership to complete a software update.
There are no open investigations with the NHTSA.
This action affects 48,924 vehicles in the United States.”
stronghold Send a notice titled “Offer New Vehicle / Suspension of Delivery – Advance Notice – Security Recall 22S41” to all dealers specifying that 2021 and 2022 Mustang Mac E Produces electrical transitions between May 27, 2020 and May 24, 2022 in automaker The Cootetlan plant in Mexico may be affected. This will likely apply to all of the roughly 100,000 Mach-Es produced since the EV was first launched, although it’s not clear how many are actually affected and will be officially recalled.
Ford’s memo shows the entry-level Mustang Mach-E High voltage battery connectors can heat up. If this happens, it may causeopen contact or solder condition,” which may cause the solder to close out while the vehicle is in motion. Owners of affected vehicles may be alerted by a powertrain malfunction warning light the next time they drive, and the Mach-E may fail to start.
The vehicle may also display “Stop Safely Now” on the dashboard, and immediate total loss of power may follow. Ford says the Mach-E will simply be discontinued. However, all 12V systems, including the power and steering brakes, should still operate.
Ford doesn’t expect to have a fix for the problem until the third quarter of 2022. Once a fix is identified and parts are available to order, Mustang Mach-E owners will be alerted via first-class mail. Read the Trader’s Bulletin:
“Do not display or deliver any new vehicles in stock that are included in this safety recall. The full dealer bulletin will be made available to dealers in the third quarter of 2022 when software and/or parts order information and repair instructions are expected to be available to support this safety recall. “
As automakers advance with new electric vehicles on new platforms designed specifically for this purpose, it appears that such recalls are becoming increasingly common. Ford has already recalled the Mach-E several times, and the same is true for competitors, such as the Tesla Model Y.
We have reached out to Ford for comment. If the automaker makes an official statement, we’ll update this article accordingly.
