Heading to the theater to see the new “Twisters” movie? Stay tuned for NOAA! You’ll see NOAA logos, props, and people (as unpaid extras) throughout the movie. Our scientists have been working hard behind the scenes with the producers to make the science as accurate and realistic (in some parts!) as possible.
“Twisters” is about rival storm-chasing teams who team up to try to predict and possibly tame the power of hurricanes. (Did you know that the main character in “Twisters” is a fictional meteorologist from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration?)
And remember: While the thought of chasing tornadoes is exciting, please don’t try to do it yourself. Whether you call them tornadoes or hurricanes, these real-life storms are far from entertainment: they’re deadly forces of nature.
Every year, including 2024, hurricanes cause massive destruction in just minutes, Tropical storms that strike the region cause tragic loss of life and property. Like the characters in the movie, real NOAA scientists are focused on saving lives in the face of these potentially deadly storms. From accurate forecasts and timely warnings from NOAA’s National Weather Service, to researchers working on cutting-edge technology to increase knowledge and create better storm monitoring tools, we work every day to keep people—and communities—safe.
