Satellite images obtained by the war zone confirm that the Mirozovsk airfield in Russia was attacked by Ukrainians about 150 miles (over 240 km) from the front lines. The operation was reportedly carried out using massive drone strikes. Ukrainian security and intelligence units used at least 70 drones to attack the base on Thursday.
Located in Russia’s Rostov region, the airfield is home to dozens of Su-34 fighter-bombers, the main weapon of war, and serves as a forward operating base for other aircraft.
The attack caused some damage, but the full extent is currently unclear.
The shelter’s lid was blown off
Images obtained from Planet Labs show the cover of the base’s only multi-aircraft shelter, located in the apron, blown off, exposing two Su-34 fighter-bombers. These planes may have suffered some damage. The hangar may have been a prime target for Ukrainian drones.
Russian sources confirmed the attack, but differed in their assessments. Budano said battle damage was being assessed. We are awaiting information on whether any aircraft have been destroyed or damaged.
There is other visual evidence that the airport was targeted. During the night, photos and videos appeared on social media showing drones flying over Mirosovsky. According to reports, numerous explosions were heard near the site. The X-Platform photo showed a huge plume of flames and black smoke near the airport.
The operation was launched from Ukrainian territory, Budanov said, and at least 70, more, Ukrainian Dragon and Splash drones attacked the airport.
This is the second large-scale Ukrainian drone strike in Mirozovsk in two months. April 5 was also attacked.
Budanov announced that the base would be attacked again.
