The United States women’s team kicked off the 2022 Concacaf W in style with a 3-0 victory over Haiti in the tournament’s opening match in Monterrey, Mexico.
The United States avoided two chances from Haiti, including a missed penalty kick that bounced off the post, but two goals from Alex Morgan in the first half and a late goal by Midge Bourse in the 84th minute were enough to secure three points for him. The Americans are on their way to the World Cup and qualify for the Olympics.
Morgan was the star of the show as she scored her one-click cross from Mallory Bew in the 16th minute to keep things going. She followed that up with a header from Kelly O’Hara’s cross in the 23rd minute.
The San Diego Wave star headed home in the 11th minute to put pressure on the Haitians early on. Morgan scored 21 goals in her 21 playoff games, including at least one goal in five consecutive playoffs.
Check out some highlights and takeaways from the game:
Haiti had strong chances
This team includes several players on the current roster who were part of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2018, and the familiarity between the team is an added advantage for them when they face teams in the CONCACAF region.
The team had a great chance in the seventh minute with a free kick opportunity by Kitna Lewis, who narrowly missed the far goal.
Domorny had a clear chance in the 37th minute as she overpowered several American defenders with only Murphy to get inside the penalty area, but she was unable to finish the match.
VAR technology made its debut at the Concacf W Championship
The VAR made his Concacaf W debut with several moments where he was used. By the end of the match, USWNT saw two goals restored, a potential penalty kick was ruled out for an offside situation, and the red card issued to Haiti was cancelled.
Shortly before the break, Roselord Borgella collided with O’Hara and made full contact with the studs at a high angle on the 50/50 ball – and a red card was issued – only to review the play and cancel the red and yellow chest instead.
Take a look at the moment here:
The USWNT eventually scored a third goal, as Mewis delivered a serve in the penalty area, and a failed clearance allowed Purce to call in on goal inside the penalty area late in the game.
