We live in a time when the premonitions of modern history are melting like glaciers on high mountains. In other words, politics is affected by global warming, and all certainty disappears. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in England.
Who led the three main political parties in England, Labour, Tory & SNP, Scottish National Party in the last House of Commons election in December 2019? Jeremy Corbyn, Boris Johnson and Nicola Sturgeon. Today, less than four years later, they are discredited, investigated by the police and expelled by their parties.
What did they say about Johnson? About the biggest election winner in recent history who used the slogan “Get Brexit Done” to give the Tories an 80-seat majority in the House of Commons.
What about Corbyn? There was talk of Labor moving towards a socialist future. Those who wrote books on the subject believed that predicting the future was infallible.
What did they say about Scotland? About the split United KingdomAbout the upcoming Scottish independence referendum. Today? SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon and her husband have been accused of mismanaging public funds. The Scottish leader resigned in February. All these clever ideas that speculate about the disintegration of the kingdom can be brushed aside. There is no trace of independence in the north of Great Britain.

Labor became increasingly anti-Semitic and Corbyn was soon replaced by party reformer Keir Stamer, who was also kicked out of the Labor group in the House of Commons. Corbyn’s wife now wants to run for a seat in parliament against Stammer.
Boris Johnson’s case is quite remarkable in every way. The Brexit culprit is branded a compulsive liar, practically the villain of modern British history. His buffoonery, often derided abroad, including by Emmanuel Macron, is now seen in the island as part of Britain’s weak position in the world. As a newly hired columnist for the British Daily Mail, he could handle it – as a politician, not so much. Only his early strong support for Ukraine is remembered, which prevented his reputation from collapsing.
We talk about the unpredictability of modern history, global warming in politics, the decline of political culture in a traditional European country. What matters is the quality of the company, not the attributes of the leader. The island woke up from the drug stupor.
A few years ago, the philosopher Hermann Lube talked about a phenomenon called “the abstraction of the present.” He opined that the times when reliable judgments can be made are becoming rare. We are working on changing the political environment. As the glaciers melt, so does political stability. Then, hopefully there will be a trend change. Or British politics? Can what was once lost be restored?
Uncertainty about the present remains. This is most felt in countries whose nuclear standoff ironically once determined the stability and predictability of global domestic politics – the United States and Russia.
For Vladimir Putin, staying in power is worth even starting a war that violates international law. to Donald Trump Seizing power is a mockery of the principles of democracy. Both are throwing the world into a spiral of uncertainty with their actions. Who can stop it? In these countries, there is an urgent need for countervailing forces to emerge.
In England, Parliament has almost absorbed itself in fighting for the right course. Five prime ministers in six years is a classic case of melting away all resolve. All this is a chimera, in the fight for Brexit. These are lost years for domestic policy to rebuild a credible British profile in the world. When Boris Johnson finally warmed up, he tried Donald Trump’s tactics, portraying himself as the ultimate victim of ill-conceived machinations.
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former US President Donald Trump
The former British prime minister has dismissed a report by a parliamentary committee accusing him of repeatedly lying to the House of Commons as “a travesty” and “a final stab in the back of a long-running political assassination”. It wasn’t until he began to face constant rebukes from the committee — half of them from his own party — that he relented and urged his friends to refrain from further belligerence. Sensing defeat, he resigned.
It is surprising how long Britain failed to recognize aspects of Johnson’s early career. One of his teachers at Eton even chastised the 17-year-old for his “arrogant attitude”.
The self-character that shines through the character of Johnson’s crime novel is even more revealing. A former British prime minister wrote about organized crime LondonAnd the main character is MP. Roger Barlow: “To someone like Barlow, the whole world seemed like an elaborate joke. Everything was available, everything was suspect. Religion, laws, rules, customs – they were obstacles.” Late, too late, Johnson’s entourage began to realize how faithful he had been to their own testimony of pride.
A change in the political environment threatens the present, a collapse of all certainty. Along with the actions of individuals who consider themselves elected to win over the plebeian majority, declare their own ego as the current law. The decline of political culture is man-made.
However, there is an open path that requires courage, intelligence and resistance for people. Our destiny is not in the stars, but in the constitution by which we organize our lives.
