The Tuman River flows through a small strip of land in the northeastern corner of the Korean Peninsula. The borders of China, Russia and North Korea meet there. However, only the latter two countries have access to the Sea of Japan on the peninsula. Chinese ships can theoretically navigate the Tumen River.
In practice, they have to seek approval from both neighboring countries. Also, the river basin is not suitable for large Chinese cargo ships. The seven-meter-long Soviet bridge does not help either. As a result, Chinese boats can only reach the Sea of Japan around the Korean Peninsula. However, this may soon change. The breakthrough came during Putin’s meeting with Xi Jinping in May.

Why is China so concerned about access to the Sea of Japan? The answer is simple – it’s definitely about money.
Why is Russia now returning to the Tuman River topic? Because China’s favor on the international stage is needed more than ever. Vladimir Putin also needs to strengthen his friendship with Beijing.
He certainly believes in concessions related to several kilometers of river and access to the Sea of Japan. Makes you think about Chinese military aid – Russia needs it in connection with the war in Ukraine.
